The department of epidemiology and biostatistics was approved by the ministry of education as a key disciplines of universities and colleges in 2002. In the following year, the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education was established as well. The current chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics is professor Siyan Zhan.
The main research fields include: Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, Nutritional Epidemiology, Reproductive/Perinatal Epidemiology, Molecular Epidemiology, Systemic Epidemiology, Pharmacological Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine, Methods in Biostatistics, Drug Abuse Prevention and Control.
From 2010 to 2019, the group has undertaken more than 200 projects which were supported by national natural science foundation of China, Chinese National Programs for Science and Technology Development, Beijing natural science foundation and international cooperation, with a total scientific research fund of over 90 million yuan. In the past three years, 355 research papers have been published including 169 SCI papers of which 21 papers has a impact factor more than 10. The team of teachers edited and participated in the compilation of more than 90 books, including the national planning materials “epidemiology”, stereoscopic teaching materials, reference materials and various branches teaching materials.

Teaching
In the past three years, the team has taught 6 to 8 undergraduate students in preventive medicine every year. 20 to 25 graduate students/year; Currently, there are 88 graduate students. Among them, 8 master's degree holders, 32 master's degree holders, 25 doctor's degree holders, 17 master's degree holders (MPH) and 6 doctor's degree holders (Dr.PH). Since the establishment of the department, the teaching team has cultivated more than 450 students with master's degree, more than 100 students with master's degree in public health (MPH) and more than 200 students with doctor's degree. Most of the graduates worked on the front lines of the public health system and have become the backbone of the public health field.

The department of epidemiology and biostatistics is hosting and participating in 53 scientific research projects, including 1 major research project of national natural science foundation of China, 2 major research program cultivation projects of national natural science foundation of China, 12 projects of national natural science foundation of China, 7 special funds of ministry of science and technology, and 3 major projects of Beijing natural science foundation of China. In the past five years, the company has won 6 national science and technology achievement awards and 4 municipal science and technology achievement awards.
