The department of toxicology was founded in 1983 as the teaching and research division of the department of health in Beijing medical university. Current director is Professor Weidong Hao. It was authorized by National Education Council to offer master degrees in 1983 and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree in 1997. Now the department is the major supporting institution of two key laboratories, Beijing Key Laboratory of Toxicological Research and Risk Assessment for Food Safety, and Compatibility Attenuation Key Laboratory of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Scientific Research
Major research directions include reproductive and developmental toxicity research of environmental endocrine disruptors, immune toxicity and mechanism of xenobiotics and environmental contaminants, TCM toxicity research and safe medication, neuro and behavioral toxicity research of environmental factors, toxicology alternatives and toxicity tests based on toxicity pathways, food and chemical risk assessment.
The currently undergoing research projects are mainly funded by National Key R&D Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and International Cooperation Programs.
Representative Scientific Research Projects:
National Key Research and Development Program of China:
Safety evaluation of rare-earth elements and additives in food based on toxic mechanism and health effect endpoints.
A cohort study of the effects of environmental and behavioral factors on embryonic development and maternal health based on external exposure monitoring.
National key technology support program:
Research of contraception methods for male--Toxicological issues of LTQ in the process of anti-fertility.
National Natural Science Foundation of China:
Study of reproductive toxicity by chlormequat chloride and its potential mechanism of impact testosterone synthesis through HPG axis.
Study on potential developmental neurotoxicity of cinnabar and detoxification of pediatric medicine “Yinianjin”.
