Yong LI, Chair and Professor
Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, School of Public Health, Peking University Health Science Center was founded in 1950, which was ever named Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, School of Public Health, Beijing Medical University. Prof. Xixuan YU was the first laboratory head, and then Prof. Puju SONG (1977~1988) and Prof. Yi LIU (1988~2001). From 2001 Prof. Yong LI is currently the chair of the department.
In 1993 and 1996 the department was approved as food safety evaluation and health food functional assessment unit respectively by Ministry of Health. Based on that, Nutritional and Functional Food Assessment Center of Beijing Medical University (now Peking University Health Science Center) was set up in 1998, which was qualified formly by State Bureau of Technical Supervision in 1999. Also the department is included in Beijing Key Discipline of Adolescent Health and Maternal & Child Health Care, and included in Beijing Key Laboratory of Toxicological Research and Risk Assessment for Food Safety.
Faculty
There are 11 faculty and staff members in the department, including 5 professors and 4 associate professors. Prof. Yong LI and Prof. Wenli ZHU were approved as Excellent Talents in University by Ministry of Education in 2001 and 2007.

Teaching
In 2001 the department achieved doctorate awarded qualification. By now more than 170 master and Ph.D. postgraduates have been qualified. The department was honored the Most Excellent Group in Teaching by Peking University Health Science Center in 2002. Now the department sets up many related courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and continuing education.
Curriculums for undergraduates: Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Nutrition and Diseases, Nutrition Basis, Maternal and Child Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Daily Life and Food Safety.
Curriculums for postgraduates: Senior Nutrition, Senior Food Hygiene, Nutrition and Diseases, Food Hygiene Supervision and Administration.
Scientific Research
The Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene has taken charge of many scientific research programms, such as “863” high technology projects, “973” projects, National Natural Science Foundation, Beijing Natural Science Foundation and other collaborative items. Major areas of research include nutrition and chronic diseases, birth defects basic study, food active components study, clinical nutritional support, genetically modified food safety assessment, athletic nutrition and so on.
In 1978 the programm “Carcinogenic effects of aflatoxin and its effective dosage”, hosted by Prof. Puju SONG, was honored by National Technology Plenary Session, and the Ministry of Health issued permissible dosage of aflatoxin in food according to this study. The department also creatively studied the effects of fruits such as Macaque Grossularia burejensis Berger on preventing the tumor induced by nitrosamine, and the program was honored by Ministry of Health in 1986. The project “Etiological and intervention basic studies on Chinese common birth defects”, hosted by Prof. Yong LI, has won Beijing Science and Technology Reward (2002, 2011), Chinese Medical Science and Technology Reward (2005), Chinese Preventive Medicine Science and Technology Reward (2011), High School Scientific Reasearch Excellent Reward awarded by Ministry of Education (2011).
